Boston is the 20th most populous of any city in the United States (behind New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Houston, Detroit, Dallas, San Diego, Phoenix, Baltimore, San Antonio, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Memphis, Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, San Jose, Cleveland, and Columbus). Of the total population, 393,937 (70.0%) are white and 184,897 non-white, including 126,229 (22.4%) who are African-American; 36,068 (6.4%) Hispanic ; 14,910 (2.7%) Asian/Pacific Islander; 1,217 and Native American; 6,473 other single race. 87,056 (15.5%) are foreign born, some 80% of them from Asia, the Caribbean or Latin America.
